Supplies List – Botanical Illustration

NOTE: Students do not need to purchase all these supplies; I will go over this list in the first class. These are supplies instructor uses; you can use items you already have. You will also have the option of working in color with watercolor or color pencil. Please bring any graphite pencils, technical pens, tracing paper and drawing paper you have to the first class. We will be working with graphite the first two classes. Instructor will have some supplies on hand, if you can’t purchase anything in advance. Students are also welcome purchase supplies together to save costs, i.e. paper products. Please bring graphite pencils, eraser and paper to first class.

 

Drawing Supplies

• Graphite Pencils- 2H, HB, 2B, 4B and 6B Staedtler Mars or Derwent. These pencils also come in complete sets (i.e., 4H - 6B)

• Drawing paper- 11” X 14” Pad of Bristol (Strathmore 500 series) plate (smooth) and vellum surface 

• Tracing Paper- Tablet 11” x 14” or larger

•  Ruler- Transparent 12”- 18”

• Erasers- Large Kneaded & Staedtler Mars white plastic or eraser stick Pentel Clic ZE-21T

• Tape - Artist’s, Drafting or 3M Scotch-Blue Painter's #2090

• Pencil Sharpener

• Black Technical Pens (Archival, Waterproof  & Acid free) - Pigma Micron pens or Staedtler 4 pack, 0.1mm, 0.3mm, 0.5mm, and 0.7mm

• Blending Stump/Tortillion (small or medium) #1 & #3 and/or a soft cloth cotton rag

• Notebook or Sketchbook -graph paper or plain (for notes/ideas)

• Saral Transfer paper, Graphite

• Magnifying Glass- 8X or 10X

 

Watercolor Supplies

• Arches 140lb or 300lb. Cold pressed or hot pressed, blocks 10X14 or larger. Single sheets (22"x 30") are the most economical.

• Watercolor palette

• Brushes: Round 00, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12 Winsor Newton, Sceptre Gold/ Series 101 Rounds Series 101

• Hake brush 2”                            

• Colors- Burnt Umber, Raw Umber, Burnt Sienna, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Red. Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Permanent Rose, Cerulean Blue, French Ultramarine, Prussian Blue, Cobalt Blue, Lemon Yellow, Neutral Tint or Payne’s Grey, Permanent Sap Green, Yellow Ochre, Quinacridone Gold. White Gouache. Daniel Smith or Winsor Newton.

• Masking fluid/Masque Pen - bottle with needle applicator for fine lines is handy 

• Sea Sponge

• Paper towels                      

• Gator board or Drawing board                                                                        

• Water container- old plastic tub/cup works fine

• Aquacover- Liquid watercolor paper

• Faber Castell Eraser -The Perfection 7057

 

Color Pencil Supplies

• Prismacolor Premier colored pencils- comes in sets up to 132 colors. The 48 set is a good starting place. I will         go over specific colors to get in class.

• Blender

• Uhu tac /poster putty

• Rising Stonehenge paper

• Arches hot press watercolor paper 140 lb.

• Canson mi teintes

Note: Instructor will have a limited quantity of supplies for sale and some to use, if you can’t get supplies before the first class.
